All public holidays in Switzerland in 2027
Only Swiss National Day on 1 August is a federal holiday. The cantons set every other public holiday, up to 8 more days a year, so the list depends on where your employees work. New Year's Day, Ascension Day, 1 August and Christmas Day are holidays in all 26 cantons.
The table shows the days that cantons treat like a Sunday under the Labour Act. Glarus also has a cantonal holiday for the Näfels Procession (Näfelser Fahrt), so check its 2027 date with the canton. Cantons, communes and employers can add further days off, for example local festivals or half days.
Public holidays per canton in 2027
Most cantons have 9 official public holidays, including 1 August. Six of the 2027 dates fall on a weekend, so the number of weekday holidays is lower.
Holidays on a weekend in 2027
St Berchtold's Day, Labour Day and Christmas Day fall on a Saturday in 2027. Swiss National Day, Assumption Day and St Stephen's Day fall on a Sunday. In Neuchâtel, 2 January and 26 December count as holidays only when they fall on a Monday, so neither applies in 2027.
Federal law requires pay only for 1 August. Whether the cantonal holidays are paid is set in the employment contract.
Long weekends in Switzerland in 2027
Ascension Day is a holiday in every canton and falls on a Thursday, so one day of leave gives everyone 4 days off. The other long weekends depend on the canton.
